Club Together – Witney Motor Club

Persistence is essential in motorsport, but it is the successes that come out at the end which make it all worth it.

Witney Motor Club had organised their annual round of the ASWMC Autocross Championship, running since 1962, and the Club has been part of it for more than 20 years. But it had to be cancelled due to the safety concerns caused by the extremely dry weather which would have put Competitors and Marshals at risk due to the likely amount of dust that would have been created.

The cancellation of this event was disappointing for everyone involved, but the Club’s success in their other events, member progression and supporting their community has outshone this.

The Evening Autotests event featured seven rounds held between May and late July to take advantage of the long days. They averaged around 12 competitors per round, and a few newcomers were in attendance, enjoying both competitive and social events.

This opened the door to Motorsport for many drivers of varying ages, from teenagers to grandparents. What started as a casual, “I have just come for a look”, often progressed to competing in the club car, often on the same evening! Some now have their own competitive cars and have been competing in AutoSOLOs and Autotests.

Young talent is thriving in the Club with Jake Humphrey, who is 16 years old and has been doing Autotest since he was 14, and has won the Witney Motor Club’s Autotest Championship two years running in a Vauxhall Astra. He went on to do his first ever circuit event in April at Castle Combe in the Hot Hatch Series. He has also competed at Silverstone, Thruxton and several more events at Castle Combe, finishing every race.

Jake has also fulfilled another ambition by being part of the Witney Motor Club team in Karun Chandhok’s Charity Karting Challenge.

The Club has also given back to the community by running a car display for the Eynsham Primary School fete. The cars displayed included Race, Rally, Trials, Sprint and classic collections of cars. The children were very excited and got to sit in the driver’s seat.

If you are based in Oxfordshire, don’t hesitate to get in contact with the Club and see how you can get involved.
