Saltire Rally Club runs Production Car Autotests, Navigational Rallies and more. These events run throughout the year, once per month on average. The wide variety of disciplines provides plenty of different opportunities for those looking to start their journey into grassroots motorsport.
The Club set about identifying the needs of their members and have been finding out what events they enjoy the most. This has been essential to give them a good insight into the types of events they want to organise. By working out what events suit their members, particularly those who use their everyday car, they could focus in on specific disciplines. The Club’s Production Car Autotests and All Forwards Autotests often see up to 40 entries.
They have focused on encouraging young people to come along and take part in events that they have specifically organised for newcomers, such as taster days often run by the Club. Starting with a group of 6 teenagers who looked into the Club events on offer, to now being in their 20’s and committed to the Club and competing in events. One of these members has developed his skills and is now likely to be this year’s Club champion.
It is members like Jim Hendry whose dedication inspires. He is in his 80’s and has only just recently stopped competing in Trials. He now mainly competes in Classic / Targa events. He is one of the many members who have spent most of their lives in motorsport and continue to support and guide younger members.
They have a diverse membership, and their competitors can be found at events across the country and abroad, driving, co-driving, officiating and marshalling.
As we all know, the above wouldn’t be possible without volunteers. Saltire Rally Club believe that marshals are extremely important, and the Club requires a strong band of them, and in return Saltire Rally Club have developed a reward scheme. This scheme enables Marshals to earn points which can be “traded” for items such as polo shirts, jackets, head torches etc. They have a list of around 70 Marshals, and the Club needs around 60 for the Saltire Classic.
The Saltire Classic has been run by the Club for over 20 years which remains a popular event attracting crews from near and far. A forerunner to the now Popular Targa style events, they maintain the disciplines of tests, navigation and regularities. A format which has developed number of drivers and even more Co-Drivers.
