An Iconic Electric Vehicle competitor
To showcase the competing power of the Electric Vehicle (EV) in motorsport, this month, we are catching up with one of the most successful EV competitors in grassroots motorsport…
John Chambers started his motorsport journey back in the 1980s with Sevenoaks & District Motor Club (SDMC), driving an ICE vehicle and competing in everything he could. John decided to join SDMC because of the breadth of motorsport disciplines that have been expertly organised throughout the years.
“Sevenoaks & District Motor Club is a great choice for motor club if you aren’t sure where you want to end up in motorsport, as the Club covers many different disciplines”
It wasn’t until 2019 when John purchased a Tesla Model 3, that he realised he could continue competing in his favourite motorsport events. Since switching to EV, John has truly become known within the grassroots motorsport community, etching his name into the history books with an iconic win in 2023 at the Watergate Bay Sprint.
Switching to an Electric Vehicle motivated John to throw himself back into the competition, as he mentions, “I hadn’t held a competition licence for years, but driving a Tesla Model 3 for the first time, gave me the motivation to get back into grassroots motorsport, and find out again how competitive I could be in one of these new-fangled electric machines.”
Throughout the years of competing with his EV, John has picked up a number of notable achievements, including several class wins in various events. It was at Watergate Bay that he took podium.
“The big prize each day is awarded to whoever is fastest overall, and on the Sunday, I managed to pip a very quick, and highly tuned Subaru Impreza to the top spot. This was the first ever Fastest Time of the Day I’m aware of for an EV at a national sprint.”
With the 2024 Watergate Bay Sprint being cancelled, John has returned to StreetCar disciplines as he continues to keep his driving skills sharp as a regular competitor at the SDMC events in his famous Tesla Model 3.
