Charlie Dovey, British Car Trials Championship Winner 2026

Charlie Dovey first experienced motorsport at 14, attending a local Car Trial with his dad. He had already learned the basics of driving thanks to a manual go-kart he received when he was younger, which made the transition into Trials a natural step. Competing gave him valuable practice, helping him develop precise car control at low speeds and build his confidence.

Having those early driving skills gave Charlie an edge over other young competitors. However, it still took a couple of years to fully control the car exactly how he wanted. During that time, he refined his approach, learning the best lines to take and the right speeds for different sections.

Charlie and his dad, who often share a car at events, have experimented with several makes and models before settling on the Renault Clio. The 2025 championship brought wetter conditions than usual, meaning Charlie had to adapt. Running a slightly heavier car helped minimise sliding, and in some sections, that extra weight worked to his advantage.

Charlie has now competed in the British Car Trials Championship three times. After being narrowly beaten by his dad in previous years, he secured the overall win on his third attempt in 2025. His practice and experience proved crucial, especially when competing against both his dad and now his sister.

One of Charlie’s favourite rounds this year was the Spring Trials at Windwhistle. As his local event, he brought along a group of friends to introduce them to the sport. All eight got involved and had a great time. One section featured a large mound, and a few of them even managed to lift wheels off the ground, a highlight Charlie particularly enjoyed.

Charlie has entered the championship again this year, joined by more of his friends, some of whom will be competing in the Under 25s category. He encourages anyone to give Car Trials a go, it’s a great way to experience the challenge of manoeuvring a car across varied terrain, while also socialising and sharing plenty of laughs.
