With a proud history stretching back more than 100 years, Devizes & District Motor Club (DDMC) continues to play a key role in grassroots motorsport across Wiltshire and the Southwest. Since its formation in 1924, the club has been dedicated to promoting accessible, enjoyable motorsport while welcoming drivers, volunteers, and enthusiasts of all ages.
Today the club remains as active as ever, running a varied calendar of events and providing opportunities for people to get involved in motorsport for the first time. A strong focus is placed on creating a friendly and supportive environment where newcomers can learn, develop skills and become part of the wider motorsport community.
Entries are already open for the event, and the club is looking forward to welcoming both experienced competitors and those trying motorsport for the very first time.
One of the highlights of the club’s calendar is the DDMC Charity AutoSOLO, taking place on Sunday 29 March 2026 at Kemble Airfield. AutoSOLOs are widely regarded as one of the best introductions to motorsport, allowing competitors to take part in their everyday road cars while navigating a cone-marked course against the clock. The emphasis is on precision, car control, and driver skill rather than outright speed, making it a safe and affordable entry point into competitive motorsport.
DDMC Chairman Chris Foxley commented that “AutoSOLOs are a brilliant way for people to experience motorsport for the first time. You can arrive in the car you drove to the event, learn valuable driving skills, and have a fantastic day out. It is grassroots motorsport at its most accessible.”
The event will once again raise funds for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity, a vital emergency service that provides lifesaving medical care across the region.
Like many grassroots events, the AutoSOLO relies heavily on volunteers. DDMC members regularly support events as marshals and officials, and the club is always keen to welcome new volunteers who want to experience motorsport from a different perspective.
Chris Foxley explained that “motorsport simply would not happen without volunteers. Our marshals are essential to the success of events, and it is a great way to get involved, learn more about the sport and be part of the action.”
The club also organises 12-car navigational rallies and scatter events, which provide a relaxed and sociable introduction to rallying and navigation. These evening events are particularly popular with members who are new to motorsport and want to develop their skills in a friendly and supportive setting.
Devizes & District Motor Club also works closely with other local motor clubs, collaborating on events and supporting each other throughout the year. This cooperation helps strengthen the regional motorsport community and creates more opportunities for competitors, organisers, and volunteers.
In addition to competitive events, the club also celebrates the enjoyment of motoring through its Valleys and Villages Classic Tour. This popular event takes participants on a scenic drive of around 110 miles through the countryside of Wiltshire and the surrounding counties, attracting classic, interesting vehicles, and providing a relaxed day out for members and guests alike.
Encouraging young drivers and newcomers into the sport remains a key focus for the club, with more people discovering grassroots motorsport through initiatives such as StreetCar which the club are a member of.
Chris Foxley says the future of the club depends on this next generation and that “It is fantastic to see so many new faces getting involved, especially younger drivers who are discovering motorsport for the first time. Clubs like ours are where people begin their motorsport journey.”
With its welcoming atmosphere, varied programme of events and strong community spirit, Devizes & District Motor Club continues to provide the perfect starting point for anyone looking to take their first steps into motorsport.
Devizes and District Motor Club are always happy to welcome newcomers to their regular club nights in Devizes. Make sure to check out the clubs upcoming AutoSOLO and get in contact with them if you are interested in starting your motorsport journey.
