Students in StreetCar

Regulations allow competitors to be as young as 14 in certain StreetCar disciplines, and throughout the year we have seen the benefits that competing in StreetCar can have for young drivers. Becca Challis from Southern Car Club has showcased just how easy it is to begin competing, as she has continued to develop her skills within the AutoSOLO discipline.

Becca started her motorsport journey in 2022 competing in karting and even reached the heights of the BIKC! However, after 3 years of competition, she decided to take a step back. Wanting to keep her motorsport dream alive, she searched for another avenue to continue progressing her skills.

At the age of 14, Becca jumped at the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a car, and began competing at an AutoSOLO with Bognor Regis Motor Club as soon as she could. Having never driven a car, competing in an AutoSOLO is the perfect starting point to teach car control to young drivers. Becca comments on her progression so far saying:

“I think my biggest progression in AutoSOLOs is actually my mentality. It’s grown my confidence and I know that when I make mistakes, it’s not a big deal.”

Becca is now a regular at Southern Car Club and enjoys the community environment at the Club. She reflects from a student’s perspective of going to grassroots motorsport events as she says:

“For me it’s been great. It’s very relaxed and everyone is so kind. I always look forward to the events and it’s a great way to end my long week at school! I’ve been treated very well, and I’ve met lots of people who I see regularly at each event”

Becca is a great example of how getting involved in StreetCar can enhance a driver’s skill behind the wheel, as she continues to gain confidence and improve her times. Her advice to fellow students wanting to get involved:

“Just go for it! AutoSOLOs were a great start for me learning the car … I think motorsport is a great thing to get into, especially at a young age” 

Becca has exciting plans to take on a new challenge as a rally driver in the new year, and if her progression so far is anything to go by, the sky is the limit for this young ambitious driver!
